Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl: The Epic
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is an example of the modern epic. It is the story of two men, Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, who are trying to accomplish great tasks and have to work with each other to get what they want. They are both chasing a group of pirates across the Caribbean. The Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl is an epic for three reasons: First, because the main characters are both called on an adventure to accomplish a quest. Jack Sparrow is on a quest to find the ship the Black Pearl and Will Turner is on a quest to find the girl he loves who was kidnapped by the pirates on the Black Pearl. They have to work together to solve their quests. Second, Pirates of the Caribbean has a supernatural element to it. The supernatural element in this is that the heroes are fighting pirates that cannot be killed because they ere cursed to turn into skeletons every night. Third, the two heroes have superman qualities. Jack Sparrow is cleverer than other men, especially at sailing, and Will Turner is a talented swordsman and he is very honorable and believes in right and wrong. These three tings make Pirates of the Caribbean a good example of the modern epic.
The first important thing that makes Pirates of the Caribbean an epic is that the main characters both have to go on a quest. Jack Sparrow is on a quest to retrieve that Black Pearl. He had been the captain but there was a mutiny and he was left on an island in the middle of nowhere. Jack is using his talents to reclaim the ship that was taken from him. He is willing to do anything to recapture his ship. For example, he still calls himself “Captain” Jack Sparrow even though he isn’t a captain anymore, and he still carries around the pistol with one shot in it that he was given when left on the island so he can kill his mutinous first mate Barbosa. Will Turner, the other main character, is on his own quest to find Elizabeth, the girl he fell in love with who was the daughter of the governor. He has to rescue Elizabeth because the pirates thought she could lift the curse kidnapped her. Will has been in love with Elizabeth since the first day he saw her, but he would never act on it because he thought she was to good for him. However, when she is kidnapped he is willing to do anything to get her back, even team up with Jack Sparrow even though he hates pirates. Both main characters are on a quest for something that means a lot to them and that that they will do anything to get back.
The Pirates of the Caribbean is also an epic because it has a supernatural element. The supernatural element in this movie is that the pirates, who are the bad guys in the movie, are cursed and turn into skeletons every night. This is bad because they cannot die so the heroes are constantly fighting something they cannot kill. This means to beat the pirates, Jack Sparrow and Will Turner have to be smarter and use their wits rather than just kill them. For example, Jack and Will use the curse for their own advantage. In the last scene of the movie, Jack takes a cursed coin so that he turns into a skeleton too. This means that he can’t be killed either. Then, just as Jack shoots Barbosa with his pistol, Will ends the curse so everyone turns back human. Jack’s compass is also a supernatural element because it points to whatever he wants most rather than to north. There is a strong supernatural element in the movie, and it is both bad for the main characters but in the end they are able to use it to their advantage.
The third reason Pirates of the Caribbean is an epic is that for a story to be an Epic the main character has to be better than the average man. This is called the superman caliber. Pirates of the Caribbean does this because Jack is much smarter than other man and a much better sailor. He is able to use his knowledge to get out of tricky situations. One example of this is when he uses a boat to escape by breathing underwater. Another example is when in the beginning of the movie he tricks the British Navy into preparing a ship to sail that he then steals. Will Turner has superman caliber because he is very good with swords. He can make them and is very skilled with one. He has a big fight scene with Jack at the beginning of the movie where he proves that he is the best swordsman. He is also smarter and more honorable than regular men. He believes in doing things right and will do whatever it takes to save the girl. An example of this is that Will is willing to give credit to his master even when he was the one to make the sword. He is also willing sacrifice himself for Elizabeth and holds a gun to his own head. Both men are better than the average man.
Pirates of the Caribbean is a modern epic for the three reasons. First, because the main characters have to go on a quest. Second, because it has a supernatural element, and third, the characters are superman caliber and are better than normal men. This movie shows that the epic is still alive in modern times and can still be enjoyed by huge numbers of people.
